ABOUT BURNS

A burn is caused by damage to the skin tissue as a result of contact with heat, chemicals, radiation, or electricity. Ranging in severity from first-degree to fourth-degree, burns are painful to the touch and usually appear red, swollen, or blistered. While first-degree burns are milder and can usually be treated at home, it's important to seek medical attention for a more serious burn, such as a second-degree burn. In general, the sooner you treat the burn, the better the healing outcome. At Mashpee Family Medicine, we treat several types of burns, including thermal burns, chemical burns, radiation burns, and electrical burns. Urgent care and same-day appointments are available at our clinic in Mashpee, MA so call us or stop by today.

HOW ARE BURNS TREATED?

For very severe burns, we recommend getting to the emergency room as soon as possible. However, more minor burns can usually be treated by a family physician. When you visit Mashpee Family Medicine, we will assess your injury and determine if we can provide treatment or if you need to visit a specialist. To treat a burn, the area will be cleansed and covered with an antibiotic ointment and a dry gauze bandage. We will look for signs of infection and possibly provide oral antibiotics or pain medication, depending on the severity of your burn. It is important to realize that burns can cause scarring, but we will do everything we can to help your skin recover as quickly and effectively as possible.
