WHAT ARE WELL-WOMAN EXAMS?

At Mashpee Family Medicine, a well-woman exam is a routine gynecology checkup to assess your overall health and screen for reproductive abnormalities, including cervical cancer and breast lumps. WHAT TO EXPECT DURING YOUR WELL-WOMAN EXAM

A well-woman exam in Mashpee, MA will begin with reviewing your medical history and checking your weight along with the date of your last menstrual cycle. Your visit may include the following:

  • Breast exam
  • Pap smear
  • Pelvic exam
  • Family planning
  • Blood work and urine test

We understand that well-woman exams can seem intimidating, but your physician will work to help you feel at ease. During your visit, we will address any feminine health concerns you may have, such as birth control, family planning, infertility, menopause, irregular menstrual cycles, STDs, or pelvic pain.

WELL-WOMAN EXAM FAQS

How often do I need a well-woman exam?
We recommend getting your well-woman exam done once a year. Generally, this yearly exam does not need to be initiated until the age of 21. If you are sexually active before 21, you may wish to begin your yearly check-ups earlier to ensure your health is maintained.

Can I have my exam if I'm on my period?
Generally speaking, it is possible to still conduct your exam if you are menstruating. However, if your appointment falls on a heavy flow day, we recommend rescheduling with our Mashpee, MA office. On occasion, the flow from your period can interfere with test results, so it is better to wait if you have a heavy flow.

What will you do in my exam?
At Mashpee Family Medicine, we care about whole-body health. Because of this, you can expect all aspects of a normal physical exam, such as blood pressure, heart rate, and other vitals to be checked. In addition, we may perform labwork, pap smears, and breast exams as part of your well-woman exam.
